Is A Freelance Writing Career For You?

freelance writing opportunities

I've recently discovered many offline freelance writing opportunities as a means of another income stream.

I came across a freelance writing career on a part-time basis purely by chance.  I think I was searching the Internet for ways to publicise my house cleaning e-book Online and stumbled upon a site that mentioned freelance writing.

Anyway, that doesn't matter as that sort of things happens all the time on the Internet doesn't it!

However...

"There are certain criteria that you need to be aware of before you start
thinking about entering a journey to become a successful freelance writer"

  1. Can you write?

  2. How's your spelling and punctuation?

  3. Are you disciplined?

  4. Can you meet deadlines?

  5. Do you have an imagination / be creative?

You need to have all the above criteria in order to be a successful freelance writer.  What constitutes a successful freelance writing career?  Well, it's getting your worked published on a regular basis.

And by getting your work published on a regular basis means that you are 'selling' your work regularly.  The more work you have published, the more you make an 'author' name for yourself, resulting in higher paid commissions.  It's kind of like a snowball effect - start slow and built up momentum!

So, let's have a look at the most popular freelance writing opportunities:

Articles for Magazines / Newspapers

The quickest and easiest way to get published and make money straight away is by writing informational and factual articles on a specific interest / niche.

You might already have a specific industry in which you have experience and knowledge.  If so, then this is where you would start.  Look for industry specific magazines within your specialist knowledge area and have a look to see if they accept articles from freelance writers. If they do, then make sure you read through their guidelines before you write your article.  This is important.  Look at the guidelines of the magazine you intend to write an article for before you write the article, otherwise you will have a good chance of getting it rejected.

Short Stories

Short fiction stories are very hard to get published, especially by a new freelancer.  There are so many freelance writers already focusing on this area that your chances are nearly 50-1 to get your story published.

However, don't let this put you off.  There will always be room for new raw talent and this could mean you.  The best advice I have been given is to start from the bottom with magazines that publish 3-5 short stories per issue and they don't actually pay much to a freelancer for these stories.

Even though they don't pay much, you will then have a few published stories under your belt to go armed with ammunition to the bigger magazines (women's magazines).

Children's Books

There are children's short stories and also children's books.  So there are two different potential markets here.  Some people think that it is so hard to break into the children's market that they give up before they even start.  Don't, there is plenty room for more.

Heck, if Madonna and Katie Price can do it so can you (although you don't have their head start as a 'celeb' to open doors for you) - but you know what I mean.

Hint: The most popular children's books are humour.  Make a child laugh then you are on your merry way!

Fiction Novels

One of the most popular freelance writing opportunities is the fiction novel.  There are whole books written on how to write these books - so it's impossible for me to cover a fraction of it here.

But my advice to you would be to go on a freelance writing course specifically for novels, or at least find a book that helps you with the guidelines you should follow in order to prepare, write and submit your novel to publishers.

Non-Fiction Novels

Non-fiction books are also very popular.  These can vary from travel guides, to cookery books to 'how to' manuals.

There is no better timing than the present for non-fiction books as the marketplace is huge for information-hungry readers, no matter what the content is.  Freelance writing opportunities for this type of book are endless.

So if you have knowledge inside of you that you would like to share with others, well now is your chance to write your own book about it.  Everybody has some knowledge/information that others would like to learn about!

Radio/TV/Stage

Last but not least if you feel you have got what it takes to write for the Radio/TV/Stage, then don't let us stop you.  As usual do your homework first and find out what is popular at the moment.  If you are not experienced in this field, it is recommended that you get yourself on a writing course for these specific industries.

You don't want to spend weeks or months writing a piece for it only to be rejected before it is even read!
