Home based business insurance is vital when you are in your 'setting-up' stage of your home business.

Here we shall look into the different kinds of insurance you might need for either a small or home based business. I would strongly recommend that you get insured before you start trading.

You would be putting yourself at risk if you run a business from home without taking out any business insurance-policies. You must be adequately insured to run your business from home.

Here is a list of small business insurances that you might need to take out.

Vehicle
Employer's Liability
Public Liability
Tradesman
Client Injury

Additional recommended insurances:

Business content and stock
Computer, documents and disks
Business Interruption
Products Liability (damage to customers'property or items)

At the very least you should protect your business assets. This will include anything that is related to your business - your computer and any equipment are essential. Home business insurance is pretty straightforward to take out and it has been designed in such a way that it does not affect your home insurance.

What you need to do is make a list of what you think you should be insured for. Ring around three or four insurance companies and get quotes from all of them.

When I done this for my house cleaning business, some companies sent out a questionnaire in the post. I had to tick the boxes of what was relevant to my business and they then quoted me based on my answers.

You will find that some providers cover you for additional types of insurances.

This is OK if you're not paying over the odds for it especially if you don't really need these 'extras'.

As with anything, read the small print. If a quote seems too cheap, then definitely read the small print.

A cheap quote might mean that the insurance provider has not covered all your specific situations.

As your businesses grows and evolves, be sure to update your home based business insurance to match it.
