Internet marketing for small business owners is a great and very cost-effective way for the 'little-guy' to advertise his/her business to make a 'big impact'.

If you haven't already done so, please read the section what is marketing to give you an overview of exactly what marketing is.

In this section we are going to go through some online advertising methods.

Obviously, as with anything these days, it depends on your advertising budget on how much you can advertise your business online.

You may want to split your advertising budget into two, some for web internet marketing and some for offline advertising.  It's up to you.

But what I would say at this point is that I think you should at least try one of the methods outlined below.

Why?  Because I think you will be missing out on a large percentage of potential customers.  More and more people are turning to the Internet to carry out searches for products or services.

So if you're not advertising Online, then you will be missing out and your competitors will be reeling them in.

And don't worry if your business is only available locally.  It doesn't matter. You can still advertise on a local level Online.  It's all very clever and sophisticated!

Website

If you want to advertise your business online then you really should have a website.

But don't panic, you only need a one or two page 'basic' website.  You definately don't need a big fancy website that costs thousands of pounds.

Honestly, only a one-page website would do.  All you would have on it would be your contact details and a brief description of what you are selling.

Think of your small website as an 'online business card' or an 'online brochure'

Another good thing about having your own website is that it also has it's own domain name (www.bobthebuilder.com) so you can use your domain name in your advertising to save on advertising space.

Yell.com

Yell.com is the online version of the paper Yellow Pages.  Many people go to Yell.com first to start their online search for the product or service they are looking for.

The great thing about Yell is that it is structured on a 'local level' so you can be assured that your business is being advertised in your own local area.

You don't need a website to advertise on Yell, but it would be beneficial if you did.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

PPC advertising is when you only pay pennies when someone clicks on your advertisement.

You 'bid' on a keyword that you think your customer would type into the search engine.

PPC advertising is a very popular method of internet marketing for small business owners.

Here's a more detailed overview how PPC advertising works.

Email Marketing

Email marketing can be very effective but only if done right.  The thing to remember is that you absolutely must not spam anybody.

Email marketing will not work if your email list is not very tightly targeted.

There are many other methods of advertising your business on the internet, but you don't want to get bogged down with too much detail.  Internet marketing is a huge subject and there are many books specifically on this subject alone.
