Taking Care of Your Customer

Why Customer Care Is Essential

Taking care of your customer should be your top priority. If it weren't for your customers you wouldn't have a business, so why wouldn't you want to instil customer care into your daily business practices?

taking care of your customer

It still puzzles me why some small business owners are arrogant and unfriendly with their customers.  Their attitude is that they have enough customers anyway so they're not bothered about you.

But I think to myself, if they didn't have such a bad attitude with their customers, then they would get repeat custom.  And if you get repeat custom, you don't have to spend as much on advertising.

"So being 'nice' is cheap, if not free, advertising"

There are two key reasons for good customer care:
  • It circulates good word of mouth bringing in new customers and
  • You get repeat custom from your existing customers.
So why wouldn't anybody not want free advertising just by being nice and professional?

The way you take care of your customers will vary depending on the type of business you run.  But in my view, no matter king of business you run it is essential that you are proactive with your customer care for the above reasons and employ some good sound customer care principles.

So what do you have to do for taking care of your customer base?

Ask For Feedback

Do this face to face or over the telephone.
  • Were they happy with your product/service?
  • Were they happy with the way the product was delivered?
  • Are they happy with the customer service?
  • Were they unhappy about anything?
  • Could anything be improved on?
Ask any question that is relevant that would help enhance your business.

Write down your feedback.  I would even go as far to say to put the results in an excel spreadsheet.

If you have good feedback, ask your customer if you could use their quotes as testimonials.

If you have negative feedback, rectify the problem.

Make A Christmas Card List

This might sound a bit corny but sending out a card at Christmas to all your customers shows that you are organised, professional, friendly and thoughtful.

They might have forgotten all about you, but a friendly Christmas card is a reminder to them about you and your business.

Offer A Loyalty Scheme

If you are in the business where you gain repeat custom, then offer your long-term customers a discount at Christmas or whenever for being a loyal customer.

This might even make them feel guilty about even thinking about going with one of your competitors!

There will be other ways for taking care of your customer base, but the above points are worth some consideration.  Be creative in how you can keep your customers happy because remember,

"Each happy customer = Free advertising!"
