So in other words, you (the affiliate) advertise the merchants' products.  If someone buys a product through your affiliate link then you get a percentage of the sale.

You don't necessarily need a website to do internet affiliate marketing.  Many people are making a very good monthly income purely through affiliate marketing and using other methods as opposed to making sales from a website.

Affiliate marketing is also sometimes known as associate marketing.

In my view the best way to build an income through affiliate programmes is to build a good website that is search engine friendly.  You can then get loads of free traffic.  You write about a subject that you know and love. Then you blend in your affiliate links within the content.  See the page describing owning a website business for further information on this.

The list is endless really. This way you earn multiple-streams of income from just one website and not just rely on affiliate marketing as one source.

You can of course direct traffic to your website via other online advertising methods.

There are literally hundreds of affiliate programmes you can join.  There are big networks such as Commission Junction, Affiliate Window, TradeDoubler etc. where you can join and have access to hundreds of products in one place and get paid from just one source (the network company).
